help grow The Sparrow Fund nest

Try to imagine this scene…

You have been filling out papers until your wrists hurt, having fingerprints taken, reading books about adoption, about the country where you hope to be traveling soon…to bring your child home. Perhaps you have had to go through a list of diagnoses and check off “yes,” “no,” or “maybe.” You may have started 6 months ago or you may started 6 years ago. Either way, you are nervous, anxious, excited all at the same time.

Late one night, you receive a call from your agency saying they have a child for you to consider. You rush to your computer to open the email with this child’s file. You can feel your heart beating in your chest. In the email, you see the child’s picture first—and you pause--and then you find a lot of information—some personal and some medical. What’s there is scant and you don’t know what it all means anyway.

And, there you sit…quiet…wondering if this is your child.

Perhaps you start searching online for information, looking for families who have parented children with the same type of story. You are seeking answers…an answer. Is this your child.

You know you need to have this file reviewed by someone who can make sense of it. Maybe you realize that your general practitioners can’t tell you too much given the information you have; they aren't experienced with looking at files like this. Maybe your physicians don’t recognize the time pressure involved and wouldn’t return your call anyway. Or, maybe you recognize that a 15-minute phone conversation with their opinion is just not enough support.

Someone online tells you about a program for adoptive families—a doctor specializing in adoptive medicine will review the child’s file, they will offer you pretravel support, in-country support (even through skype if needed), and postadoption support and advice. This is exactly what you need.

But this program is not cheap. And, you have spent so much already and are saving as much as you can just to pay the upcoming expenses once you accept a referral. You need these services; but, you any expense not required right now cannot be justified.

On January 18, 2010, we saw our daughter’s face for the first time. We had joined a program like this early on and were able to benefit from the full-range of their services. They helped us understand every detail of information we were given about the child who became our daughter. They helped prepare us for travel. They worked with us when we were in China and our daughter was sick. And, they have offered us ongoing support for the year since we’ve been home.

And, that has been invaluable to us and played a major role in the founding of The Sparrow Fund as we sought to answer the call to actively support preadoptive and adoptive families.

The Sparrow Fund, just launched in April, is committed to supporting adoptive families by providing grants for this purpose—grants to pay for preadoption counseling and support, medical reviews of the file of the child they are referred, and postadoption support as their child becomes part of their family.

We want families to have the most support possible so that the adoption experience goes as smoothly as possible for the family and the child becoming part of their family.

The Sparrow Fund needs your help – (1) Give families who may benefit from these program the information. Let them know we’re here and want to work with them. (2) Support The Sparrow Fund via a private donation on their site or through a unique opportunity this month.

In support of the work that The Sparrow Fund is doing and to help get that work rolling, the following retailers have very generously agreed to donate to The Sparrow Fund 10% of their total sales during the entire month of May! (They totally rock.) Please visit these retailers' sites, personally thank them for supporting adoption and the work of The Sparrow Fund, and start buying! And, feel free to come on by my personal blog to read about these businesses--I'm featuring at least one everyday, highlighting some of my faves from them.

A big Thank You to guest blogger Kelly Raudenbush for this post and the awesome work she (and her family) are doing for orphans and adoptive families! Check out how The Sparrow Fund "hatched", like her on FaceBook...and be sure to go buy something extra fabulous for your little chickadees.

Much love, L

Happy Mother's Day

For all those moms out there...and the things that they do even when they think nobody is looking. Happy Mother's Day!

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator,
and I wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you feed a stray cat,
and I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw you make my favorite cake for me,
and I knew that little things are special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I heard you say a prayer,
and I believed that there was a God to talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I felt you kiss me goodnight,
and I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw tears come from your eyes,
and I learned that sometimes things hurt,
but it's alright to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I saw that you cared,
and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking,
I looked....
and I wanted to say thanks for all the things
I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.

Benefit of the Doubt

Show of hands - who likes getting the benefit of the doubt?  Uh, right here!!! It's up there with having your grade rounded up on a major test.

This is something that I want so desperately from friends and family and yet it is so hard to get. These people know me, most of them know me really well, and when circumstances seem crazy I just crave their understanding. When messages don't get returned right away, when things get done differently than anticipated, or when they hear something from someone else... I hope and pray that they will step back and take themselves out of the equation for a minute to think that things just don't add up. "We know her better than that -- something must be going on. We'll just give her the benefit of the doubt... " Such sweet words.

This morning in my quiet time I read a brilliant devotional entry from Oswald Chambers - it talked about having the faith to persevere and said...

"even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him." Wow!

If I think people should fall back on my character when in doubt, how much more should we be able to depend on God's UNFAILING character when things don't make sense in our lives??

So even though we don't have jobs, or money, even though we are still trying to make a new life for ourselves in a new state, even though God is placing other special needs babies heavily on our hearts...we know Him! I choose to give Him the benefit of the doubt (and stop whining about getting it myself) and know that His plan is for our good...bottom line. Feels so good!

8 months old

Got an email today that said "Your 8-month-old is ready for a whole new set of firsts". Ouch.

My baby would have been 8 months old now...picking up Cheerios with little dimpled fingers, crawling on cute little knees, and melting hearts with "ma-ma" and "da-da". Ouch, ouch.

Losing a precious baby through miscarriage does not feel "normal"...it sucks.

I am ultimately so grateful that God has given me the experiences that He has, and is so lovingly molding me into the person He intends...but it stings sometimes. I cherish the two boys I have yet there will always be someone missing.

Since I can't hold him and tell him about You, can You hold him and tell him about me?

Mad Skills

Nathan's English skills are amazing - talking and singing all day long. And to think that this was one of the big worries I had going into an older kid adoption.

It's really been amazing, and now he is SPELLING too! He's been watching a show on PBS Kids called Word World that has gotten him all excited about this newest skill.

So here it is, Nathan-style...   "a-e-o donkey, a-e-o book, a-e-o dog, a-e-o duck". Okay, so we may have a little work left! :)

Unexpected Gift

A wonderful woman saw a comment that I left on a group somewhere, checked out the blog, and recognized Nathan as one of the kids that was in her son's baby house group. I can't express how exciting it is to get a glimpse of what your child looked like prior to your meeting them. Great moment for sure!

Nate is about 2 1/2 in these photos and he is really making the baby house clothes look good! :) Hard to imagine that it would still be another three years before we would even meet him.

Bad, bad blogger

I have been a bad, bad blogger. So much going on and so little time to document it all!

* six-month report to Kazakhstan - filed
* move from GA to VA - completed (not all of the unpacking, but....)
* million more changes ranging from small to MAJOR - yep, those too

I promise to get back to the blogging some time in the near future, but for now I'll just post some pictures from Great Falls Park the other day....

Gotta love the natural beauty of Virginia...and the cuties that live there. :)
